A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also featured celebrity crewmates.

The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a social media post, recalling a check-in call from a mission companion in the period after the landing.

She portrayed the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has focused her career on gynecological science and conducted tests during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her scientific research and astronaut training to the historic significance of her background – was drowned out under the deluge of misogyny.

She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of survivors of assault.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

A Path to Recovery

Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the followers whose support were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.

She added that even with the backlash, important benefits had emerged from the flight, including spotlight on her women's health research and platforms for her activism.

About the Mission

The fully automated spacecraft launched from its launch site in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of space.

The team of pioneers also included experts in different industries.

The company behind the mission is a private space firm established by a Amazon founder.
