Can You Crack This? The Overlooked Netherlands Invention Which Shaped our Contemporary Globe

There are many candidates to claim the title of “world’s greatest invention.” The wheel. The movable type. The combustion motor.

According to a recent publication, though, that honor belongs to a mechanised timber mill conceived through Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.

“Before automated cutting, building a modest merchant vessel required around ten lumberjacks working for three months,” writes the author. “With wind-powered lumber mills, the same quantity of cut lumber might be manufactured in less than seven days.”

Thanks to their rapid mechanical saw, which converted logs to boards with almost no manual labor, Dutch builders were able to build ships faster compared to anyone else, an advantage that unleashed a century of Netherlands maritime, financial as well as cultural supremacy in Europe and the globe.

The First True Manufacturing Machine

The inventor's sawmill, argues Dávila, represented “humanity’s initial true factory machine.” A windmill rotated a wheel. One component transformed the circular movement into vertical action to power the cutting blade. A separate mechanism changed the spinning motion into a lateral movement feeding the timber toward the cutter. A geared mechanism shifted the log ahead one precise increment per stroke.

“Every component was modest on its own. The Dutchman’s genius lay in how to integrate these parts so the machine acted in a perfectly controlled order, cutting with each descending stroke while moving with each return motion. It was an astonishingly clever application of fundamental components.”
