Trump Calls for Imprisonment of Windy City Mayor and Illinois Governor as National Guard Deploy in Metropolis

Former President Donald J. Trump on midweek called for the detainment of Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, accusing them of failing to protect federal immigration officers.

"Chicago's Mayor should be jailed for endangering Immigration agents!" Trump wrote on his platform Wednesday morning. "The Illinois governor too!"

The two leaders are members of the Democratic faction.

These remarks coincide with the deployment of National Guard personnel in the Windy City area following directives from the federal administration, notwithstanding vehement protests from state officials such as the governor and mayor.

"This marks yet another attempt where Trump has sought to have an African American leader unjustly detained," Johnson responded on that day. "I'm not going put."

Pritzker also replied via online channels, stating: "I will not back down. Trump is now demanding arrests of democratically chosen representatives resisting his authority. What's next on the road toward complete autocracy?"

By Wednesday morning, National Guard units from the Lone Star State had reached the Elwood army reserve center, an army base roughly 80 kilometers from Chicago, as the federal government advances with its aggressive crime strategy and mass deportation efforts.

The president has labeled Chicago a "dangerous hellhole", even though official statistics indicate notable reductions in most criminal activities, including homicides.

On Wednesday, 200 Texas National Guard members were scheduled to arrive to the region, with another 300 Illinois guard personnel readying for deployment, per sources. Officials indicated the soldiers would avoid law enforcement duties but would secure ICE officers and their facilities.

Soldiers wearing uniforms with state guard insignia were spotted at the US army reserve center in Elwood. Trucks marked "Emergency Disaster Services" dropped off portable toilets and essential items. Trailers were arranged in lines. Extra barriers was installed around the compound.

The Federal Aviation Administration ordered no-fly zones over the military base for security reasons until 6 December.

The administration has escalated deportation operations in Chicago in the past month, triggering demonstrations, especially near an immigration center in a Chicago suburb.

Earlier this week, state and city initiated legal action targeting the federal government, seeking to block the military dispatch, asking a court to stop what they describe as "Trump's long-declared 'Battle'" on the city and state, calling it "unlawful and dangerous".

A court hearing on their case is set for the next day.

Mayor Johnson also signed an executive order on Monday prohibiting federal immigration agents and related personnel from using city-owned property as staging areas for deportation efforts.

Pritzker has accused the president of using troops as "political props" and "chess pieces".

At a news conference on Tuesday, Pritzker said that Trump is attempting to "justify and make acceptable the presence of military personnel under his direct command."

The nearly 150-year-old Posse Comitatus Act restricts the army's involvement in civilian law enforcement. However, the president has stated he would be prepared to activate the emergency powers, which permits a president to send regular army in states that are failing to put down an uprising or are resisting national authority.

Since starting his second term, the president has sent or mentioned deploying military units to over ten cities, including Baltimore; Washington DC; New Orleans and California cities like Oakland, San Francisco and Los Angeles, arguing that the armed forces is necessary to combat crime and protect immigration agents.

Data shows that serious offenses nationwide has decreased in recent years. In Chicago, for example, murders were reduced 31% to 278 through late summer, according to law enforcement reports.

A recent poll published on that day found that the majority of US citizens disapprove of the sending of military forces without an external threat.
